If you need it right away, such as a homebuyer under contract with a short due diligence period, we can do it for you. We use an electronic monitor that samples and measures the air continuously every hour., and the minimum test period recommended by the US EPA is 48 hours. Then, when we retrieve the machine, we hook it up to our computer and get immediate results. We charge $169 if we place or retrieve the machine at the time of your home inspection. If we have to make two separate trips to place and retrieve the radon monitor, we charge $199 if done along with a home inspection, and $249 if the radon test is done by itself without a home inspection.
If you can wait about 10 days, you can do it yourself. You can buy a test kit at Lowe's or Home Depot and follow the instructions. You place the container for at least 48 hours, mail it to the lab, wait for it to arrive at the lab, wait more time for the testing, then get the results.after they've done the lab work - a total of about 7 to 10 days. Home Depot and Lowe's sell test kits for between $30 and $40. Lab fees are generally another $30 to $40, or a total of between $60 and $80.
If you have 4 to 6 weeks, you can do it yourself using a test kit from the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service for $6.50, lab fees included. Click here, fill out the form, and when you complete the county selection it will show you where to send your check. Overall this method takes about 6 weeks. They take about 3 to 4 weeks to get you the kit, another 2 days to sample the air in your house, then another week to 10 days to mail the test kit to the lab and get your results. If you have the time, its a great option.
The difference is time. You choose. what works best for you. If you need it right away, call Medallion. If you have 7 to 10 days, you can do it yourself for less. If you can wait 4 to 6 weeks, get the kit from UGA and do it yourself.
